What is Encaustic?

I fell in love with encaustics 5 years ago.

I first learned about encaustics on Instagram. I took an online class to learn the basics and then began finding my own voice with this challenging medium.

Encaustic Medium

Encaustic medium is a mixture of purified beeswax and damar resin. I melt the mixture until it becomes a clear liquid.

Build your palette

The colors come in concentrated block form. I melt a little of the color with the clear medium to build my palette.

Wood Panels

I paint on wood panels. Canvas is too flexible and would cause the wax to crack.

Fusing

Each layer must be fused together using a blowtorch or heat gun.

I carve into the wax to create details.

I use a sharp carving tool to create fine lines and details. I then fill in those carved lines with oil paint.

You can touch it!

I love the texture that the wax creates. Most art should not be touched, but not encaustics!
